Cutting Myself Some Slack
The last couple of pictures I posted are not actually taken today, or yesterday.  They are from a few months ago. But I like them so I'm using them.  Somedays I guess it isn't going to be practical for me to get my camera out every single day to snap a shot.  I'm a Mama first, after all.  So it is snowing and icy and cold today, and school has already been cancelled for tomorrow.  So I put a new edit on an old photo and I'm claiming for today since I find editing to part of my journey.  It's a cool tree, huh?!

Cool Wall
I do photo sessions at this nice path near our house.  There's a really cool train tunnel on the path and I love this wall.  I don't know why it is this shade of blue - surely it wasn't purposefully painted that way? I dunno, but I like it.

Shawn hates getting his picture taken.  The irony is not lost on me.  But I needed him to "pose" for me so I could practice my headshot lighting.  He's going to hate that I posted this.  But that's the price you pay when you buy your wife such an awesome camera.  I love his eyes.  And those lips.  And him.

Yesterday I texted Carissa: "I need bangs!" Carissa is one of my hippest friends with the most fabulous hair.  And her mom is a hair stylist, so I figured she inherited her ability to cut hair.  I need bangs because I have 2 enormous wrinkles on my forehead and I hate them with a passion.  Bigger fish to fry? Sure, but those two wrinkles are so so so ugly and I just can't deal.  So today at playgroup C judiciously and carefully cut me some swoopy-bangs. I {heart} them for all of their forgiving nature.

Shadow Conductor
Still not feeling 100% (but better than my sweet husband), but we did manage a nice little walk in the Colorado sunshine today.  This is Holden's shadow, which looks like he's conducting an orchestra of shadows.  I like that.

OK, I'm still not feeling good, and getting out the camera just wasn't happening.  But hey, remember when I used to do "Vintage Wednesdays" on the blog? Consider this Vintage Wednesday.  This is Jackson, taken in January of 2005, not long after we moved to Colorado and I discovered the beauty of "natural light" photography (but pre DSLR equipment).  Gads he was a ridiculously cute baby.

Starbucks Storytime
Where everybody knows your name...

Our local Starbucks (we have 2 in our quaint town, but this one is definitely more "family friendly") has storytime twice a week.  We LOVE storytime at the 'buck!  Holden gets a story, a snack and a craft.  Mommy gets a lovely hot Americano with half-n-half and a chance to chat with friends and even make new friends (I met my dear friend Lynn at storytime a week after she moved to Colorado -- turns out she lives about half a mile from us and our kiddos have a great time together)!  The folks at this particular Starbucks know us by name, even Holden.  They know his drink order even - kid's cocoa, 100 degrees, no whip.  I keep telling them I want them to put his order on the menu and call it "The Holden." They haven't done so yet, but I'm sure its in the works!  I love having a place to go with him where we are both welcome and always with a smile and a "how are you guys doing?!" exclamation.  It is the kind of thing that makes living in our small town even more delightful.  Sure Starbucks is a behemoth empire but having lived in Seattle through its initial boom, it still feels like a great neighborhood spot to me.  And it definitely has become for us a place where everybody knows our name. Love that!

Today Holden asked me if he could go in the new studio. I took away one of the boys' play spaces when I commandeered our extra bedroom for the new studio.  Don't fret for them, they still have a playroom and a basement so I'm not too worried that they are huddling in a dark corner with no place to play.  However, it WAS their space originally, so I had to set some new rules when I put all the equipment in there.  Basically the new rule was "STAY OUT!"  And you know what? They have. They only go in there if I need them to "pose" for me.  They haven't even been curious.  Even one of my girlfriends said I would probably need a lock on the door to keep them out, but it hasn't been necessary.  My boys don't listen to every word the exits my bossy mouth, but they heeded my words on the studio and that makes me happy and proud.  It is the little things in parenting that make ya smile, ya know?!

Anyway, today he asked to go into the room and asked me to take some shots of him. Now that is something else altogether.  They NEVER ask me to take their pictures because I do it ALL THE TIME, and they are relatively sick of having lenses in their faces all the time.  But with them I take snapshots, not portraits -- I don't think about composition or lighting or setting my white balance with them.  I just snap.  Sometimes I get fabulous portraits, sometimes I get not-so-fabulous pictures.  But today's mini-session was purposeful. I used lights. And a reflector. And props.  And set my white balance.  And we had fun!  The above isn't the best shot of the day - I'll put those up on the photography blog - but it was one of my favorites.  Nope, his face isn't even showing very much, but something about it just made me smile so I kept it.  To me that's what I want to capture in my clients, too.  That "thing" that just makes me smile.  My little man does that for me a lot.  I pretty much love that about him.

Crafting on MLK Day
Everyone was home from school/work today.  We were mellow, and honestly, a little bored.  That's not such a bad feeling.  I thought I'd try explaining why today was significant to Jackson.  Jackson didn't "get" it.  Didn't understand why everyone wasn't always equal (and let's face it, we still have a long way to go).  I think that shows not the innocence of children but the wisdom.

Karate Kid
Tough. Sensitive. Focused. Determined.

I can't end this entry with just a photo and a caption.  This deserves so much more.  Jackson started Karate this week.  He's training with a very renowned Sensei.  He, the Sensei, is known to be extremely assertive and stern, and this was a hard introduction for my little guy.  The first lesson went well, but the introduction to such sternness (coupled with a great deal of praise I might add) was rough on Jackson.  He left the lesson in tears, vowing to never return.  He's used to, at least in an educational setting, being one of the very "best."  He's used to getting answers right and never being scolded or corrected.  He really is a terrific student.  Something we're very proud of him for because we know it is hard for him sometimes to control frustrations and anger.  Knowing he has the potential to do well, I wasn't ready to let him quit after one lesson.  We told him he had to give it a full month, and explained that martial arts is a very different sport that depends greatly on discipline and respect.

By the time we were home and the tears had dried, he was ready to show Daddy his moves and his new Gi (his uniform - he's so cute in it).  I think he just needed some time to process everything.  To reflect that even though the Sensei was tough, he was also kind and generous and helpful.  By lesson two Jackson was ready to impress.  He listened with open ears and heart, and took to heart any critique with respect.  I was astounded that within 2 lessons he was transformed.  He tried -- that's all I wanted for him -- and tried hard at that.  He wanted desperately to do the moves correctly and to impress the Sensei.  We'll see how the next month goes. I hope he'll love the sport and want to pursue it, but if he decides at the end he doesn't want to continue, I'll respect that as well.

I have high hopes for a 365 photo project.  The idea is simple - one photo a day for 365 days.  We shall see if can actually stick with it, but since I haven't been blogging regularly the past year I thought it would be fun to try this project.  Follow along with me if you like!  Oh, and happy new year!
